Mark 5:21-43
21 When Jesus had again crossed over by boat to the other side of the lake, a large crowd gathered around him while he was by the lake. 22 The
n one of the synagogue leaders, named Jairus, came, and when he saw Jesus, he fell at his feet. 23 He pleaded earnestly with him, “My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live.” 24 So Jesus went with him.A large crowd followed and pressed around him. 25 And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. 26 She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, 28 because she thought, “If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed.” 29 Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. 30 At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?” 31 “You see the people crowding against you,” his disciples answered, “and yet you can ask, ‘Who touched me?’ ”32 But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace and be freed from your suffering.” 35 While Jesus was still speaking, some people came from the house of Jairus, the synagogue leader. “Your daughter is dead,” they said. “Why bother the teacher anymore?”
36 Overhearing[c] what they said, Jesus told him, “Don’t be afraid; just believe.”
37 He did not let anyone follow him except Peter, James and John the brother of James. 38 When they came to the home of the synagogue leader, Jesus saw a commotion, with people crying and wailing loudly. 39 He went in and said to them, “Why all this commotion and wailing? The child is not dead but asleep.” 40 But they laughed at him. After he put them all out, he took the child’s father and mother and the disciples who were with him, and went in where the child was. 41 He took her by the hand and said to her, “Talitha koum!” (which means “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). 42 Immediately the girl stood up and began to walk around (she was twelve years old). At this they were completely astonished. 43 He gave strict orders not to let anyone know about this, and told them to give her something to eat.
Step number one. To move from what you know to knowing what you believe, requires walking and living by faith rather than by the influences of our circumstances.
It’s nothing wrong with recognizing your present circumstances. Jairus told Jesus his daughter was at the point of death. However in the midst of his darkest hour, he applied his faith in Jesus. How do we know this? Jairus said Lord my daughter is at the point of death, come lay your hands on her that she may live and she shall be healed.
Moving from what you know to knowing what you believe requires applying your faith in the abilities of Jesus and we see this in Jairus’s actions in verse 23.
Step two. Moving from what you know to knowing what you believe will automatically influence those around you. It could be your coworkers, your neighbors, or even family members. This could Influence them to want to put their faith in Jesus.
If you noticed verses 24 through 34. There was a lady who was suffering for twelve years with an affliction. In the middle of the story about Jairus, she says, ‘if I can just touch his clothes’. I too shall be healed. Is it possible? That she overheard Jairus conversation with Jesus concerning his daughter.
Yes, I believe when we move from just believing what we know to knowing what we believe those around us will also be motivated to put their faith in Jesus.
Step three. As we move from believing what we know to knowing what we believe, expect opposition from Satan.
If you notice in verse 35, one of Jairus’s friends came to him with some bad news. He said it’s too late your daughter is dead. Leave Jesus along.
Beloved, for every attack of the enemy, the Lord will give us an assuring word to apply our faith in him.
In verse 36 Jesus said to Jairus, do not be afraid only believe. Jairus had a critical decision to make. Either to allow his circumstance to dictate choice or continue to believe in the ability that Jesus would come through for him.
Moving from believing what you know to knowing what you believe, requires unwavering trust in the promises of God. And I’m not to allow the influence of fear and doubts dominate my life.
Step Four, to help us move from believing what we know to knowing what we believe, requires us to develop an inner circle of a few important people around us with like mindedness.
We all need these kinds of individuals in our lives to spur us along when we get weak in our faith.
If you notice in verse 37 Jesus only allowed Peter, James and John to go with him to Jairus’s house. I believe Jesus only wanted those around him who would fully believe that he had the ability to raise Jairus’s daughter from the dead.
If you and I want to move from believing what we know to knowing what we believe we need to surround ourselves with like-minded people.
And we see the latter part of this chapter; it wasn’t enough for Jairus to have mere knowledge of Jesus. He took what he knew and put actions to it by applying his faith; he experienced a super natural move of God.
Beloved, let us move from believing what we know to knowing what we believe.
As we grow in the grace of God, we will not be limited to MAKING choices based on the influence of our circumstances of life.
